At Liverpool Crown Court, as in every Crown Court, the prosecution prepares and serves the case papers. The defence still has documents of its own to serve, with fixed time limits.
The Crown Court hears the more serious criminal cases, usually before a judge and jury. Some cases arrive from a magistrates' court, for example where the defendant has chosen jury trial or the magistrates send a case up for sentence.

The prosecutor serves the documents containing the prosecution evidence on the defendant and the Crown Court at the same time. For a case sent for trial, the time limit is not more than 50 days after sending if the defendant is in custody, or 70 days if on bail.
Sources: Criminal Procedure Rules 2025, rule 3.19 (opens in a new tab)
After the prosecution evidence is served, the defendant must give a defence statement within 28 days of the prosecutor's initial disclosure, served on the court and the prosecutor. A defence witness notice is due within the same time. The court may draw inferences from a missing or late statement.

An appeal to the Crown Court against a magistrates' court conviction or sentence must be started by serving an appeal notice not more than 15 business days after sentence — or sooner, from the date sentence is deferred or the case is committed for sentence, if either happens first.
Sources: Criminal Procedure Rules 2025, rule 34.2 (opens in a new tab)
When sentencing, the judge takes into account mitigation and any reports and references about the defendant, so these are worth keeping organised and ready.

BundleCreator can help you keep your own copy of the papers you have been served, and any references or notes you want to rely on, in a clear indexed order. It does not replace the material served by the prosecution, or advice from a solicitor.
